The reason I'm telling you all this is not just to correct you, but so many people think that it's MIDI that's the problem - or General MIDI, when actually, it's the sound generator that's the issue. You're really asking about the default SOUNDS in Sibelius or MuseScore.Īll the MIDI stuff is is the information that triggers those sounds, and if you take the same exact MIDI file and send it to two different sound generators, it can sound very different (and that could be why one poster has different sounds on Linux versus Windows). It's "a Police car" - so "a MIDI File", " a MIDI Controller" and so on - no such thing as "a MIDI" or "MIDIs". There's no such thing as "a Police" or "Polices" (as a noun). No such word as "MIDIs" (despite being able to find it online). That's the Synthesizer, Synthesizer Chip, Soundcard (which has a Synthesizer Chip on it), Soundfont, Sample, and so on. It's merely the instructions to make sound. Just to be nit picky, no, because General MIDI MAKES NO SOUND. So it's not surprising that Sibelius sounds better, but I would never recommend paying for Sibelius just for the sounds. The elephant in the room is that Sibelius costs a lot of money, and the samples are like 30GB compared to the however-many MB of MuseScore. Of course, with a lot of tweaking, you can get even the default sounds to be a little more convincing. You can actually get some decent free VSTs from Spitfire and elsewhere that, at least for some instruments and some kinds of music, might sound better than either the default Sibelius or MuseScore sounds. When someone shares default MuseScore audio for their pieces here, I usually look through the score without listening, because I don't find the default audio very compelling.īut yeah, neither of them is great - certainly not what you'd want for a serious mock-up.

It does vary depending on the instrument and style, but back in the day I got some pretty decent results from Sibelius 7 Sounds.

Send your sound set to and we will add it here.Sibelius is definitely better than MuseScore last I checked (although I think MuseScore has been making improvements). If you have created a sound set for a MIDI device or a sample library, please share it with the Sibelius user community. See 4.10 Playback devices in Help > Sibelius Reference for more details. To use this sound set inside Sibelius, use the Play > Playback Devices dialog. (You may have to create the Sibelius 5 and Sounds folders yourself.)
